New Controls, Same Iron: How First Gear put its Lorenz LS-180 Back in Production

Oct 14, 2026 | Ross Wegryn-Jones

Good iron is worth keeping.

First Gear (Fort Wayne, IN) had a Lorenz gear shaper that was still mechanically sound and rigid, but its original control was becoming obsolete and hard to support. Instead of replacing the machine, they had MTB recontrol it on their own floor.

✅ Original Lorenz rigidity and accuracy retained
✅ Modern, supportable CNC control and updated functionality
✅ No new-machine lead time or capital expense

In First Gear's words: "MTB was able to take a proven piece of equipment and bring the control system and functionality up to modern standards while retaining the rigidity and capability of the original machine."

They're already planning the next one with us. Thank you, First Gear, for the trust.

Have a mechanically sound machine held back by an aging control? Let's talk.
