Lorenz LFS-282 CNC Gear Shaping Machine — In Process for Recertification & Fanuc Recontrol by Machine Tool Builders
Machine Tool Builders is currently recertifying and recontroling a Lorenz LFS-282, a rigid and exceptionally precise gear-shaping platform built on the traditional Lorenz strengths of stability, accuracy, and long mechanical life. This model shares a working range similar to the classic Fellows 10-4, but offers significantly greater capability; including a pivoting X-axis column for ±30° tapers, a shaping head mounted on a Z-axis slide for clean in/out part access, and a fully programmable stroke length. Together, these features deliver faster changeovers and expanded versatility for both internal and external gear-shaping applications.
This machine can be optionally equipped with a magazine-style loader or configured for manual loading, depending on your production environment and part flow requirements.
Currently on our shop floor, the LFS-282 is undergoing MTB’s complete recertification program: full mechanical and functional inspection, paint restoration, and a ground-up Fanuc CNC recontrol. Upon completion; slated for mid-2026, with scheduling flexibility if needed—the machine will be delivered production-ready.
The CNC upgrade centers on the Fanuc 0i-MF Plus platform, paired with new Fanuc Alpha HVi servomotors and drives, plus a new Alpha-series spindle drive system. A brand-new electrical cabinet is being built from the ground up, incorporating new wiring where required and all-new industrial components throughout: motors, starters, relays, power supplies, contactors, terminal strips, and fuses. MTB’s conversational software is included, providing intuitive, menu-driven setup screens that streamline tooling input, setup, and part-program recall—significantly reducing setup time while improving repeatability.
The shaping spindle is equipped with a servo-controlled orienting system that delivers precise positioning at TDC and BDC with positive confirmation. Elevation and stroke length are driven by a shared servo motor but monitored with separate feedback systems, maintaining accuracy across the full usable stroke.
Once recertification and CNC recontrol are complete, this Lorenz LFS-282 will represent a rare combination of German mechanical integrity and modern Fanuc architecture—a capable, serviceable 280-mm class shaper ready for years of reliable operation. For manufacturers needing a flexible, dependable CNC shaper backed by a team that supports everything it sells, this machine is an excellent fit.
